Who Do You Need to Become to Create the Life You Want?

The reason we pursue goals is that it will help ourselves to expand and grow; Achieving goals by themselves will not make us happy in the long term, it is who you become as you overcome your obstacles to achieve your goals can give you the deepest and long-lasting sense of fulfillment.
Before you change what you do, you must first decide who you are becoming.
Here is a truth that took me years to understand:
You can want something deeply. You can work hard for it. You can come so close you can almost touch it. But if the vision of who you are does not match the life you are reaching for, something inside you will quietly, persistently pull you back.
This is not failure. This is identity—the most powerful force in human psychology: the need to stay consistent with who we believe we are.
So before we talk about what you want to achieve, let us ask the more important question:
Who do you need to become to get there?
“Who are you now? Who have you decided to become? Make this decision consciously. Make it carefully. Make it powerfully.”— Tony Robbins
Your Identity Shapes Everything
Think about it this way. A person who sees themselves as healthy makes different choices at the grocery store than someone who sees themselves as someone "trying to eat better." A person who identifies as a leader shows up differently in a meeting than someone who thinks they are just an employee.
The actions follow the identity. Always.
Your capability is constant—but how much of it you use depends entirely on the identity you hold for yourself. You are not limited by your talent. You are limited by your story about who you are.
The good news? You wrote that story. And you can rewrite it.
Ask Yourself “Who have I been—and is that person capable of creating the life I want?” |
Three Areas Where Identity Must Shift
1. How you see yourself
This is the foundation. Do you see yourself as someone who is healthy, or someone who is trying to be healthy? As a person who creates, leads, loves deeply, or contributes boldly—or as someone who wishes they could? The language you use about yourself matters enormously. Begin speaking about yourself as who you are becoming, not as who you have been.
“If you could describe yourself in just five aspirational words—words that capture who you are at your best in the future—what would those words be?” |
2. How you show up for others
Your relationships are a mirror of your identity. How do you show up for the people you love? As patient, present, and generous—or as distracted, reactive, and depleted? The version of you that shows up in your closest relationships tells you exactly who you are being right now. And it shows you clearly who you need to grow into.
3. How you treat yourself
This is the one most of us overlook. The way you speak to yourself, the standards you hold for your own health, rest, and nourishment, the boundaries you keep—all of these are declarations of identity. Someone who truly loves and respects themselves makes different daily choices than someone who is waiting to feel worthy first. You do not wait to feel worthy. You decide to be worthy—and act accordingly.
“Be more intentional about who you want to become. Have vision beyond your current circumstances. Imagine your best future self, and start acting like that person today.” — Brendon Burchard
Your Identity Exercise: Five Words
Choose Five aspirational words that describe who you are at your best. Not who you think you should be. Not who others want you to be. The truest, most alive, most purposeful version of you.
Examples: Radiant. Courageous. Present. Grounded. Generous. Joyful. Free. Bold. Loving. Purposeful. Write your Five words here:
Word 1 | Word 2 | Word 3 |
________________ | ________________ | ________________ |
Word 4 | Word 5 |
|
________________ | ________________ |
|
Now ask yourself: if I truly embodied these five words today, what would I do differently this morning? This week? What would I stop doing? What would I start?
That gap between who you are being and who you are becoming—that is where your transformation lives.
From Design Your Life: “You are not too late and you are not too early. You can build your way forward from wherever you are right now.” |
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your identity.
How to Begin Today
You do not need to overhaul your entire life this week. Identity shifts happen through small, consistent, intentional acts.
Choose one of your five words. Then ask yourself one simple question every morning:
"How would the most [your word] version of me handle today?" |
Then live that answer. Just for today. One choice. One moment. One act that is consistent with who you are becoming.
Over time, those choices become habits. Those habits become character. And that character becomes the life you have been reaching for.
You already have everything inside you.
The version of you that is healthy, purposeful, joyful, and free—they are not far away. They are not waiting for the perfect conditions.
They are waiting for you to decide.
Decide who you are. Then become that person—on purpose, every single day.
